There are a lot of classic car owners who choose not to take their cherished vehicles on the roads during the winter period. Instead, they lock them up in their garages having cleaned and polished them before putting suitable covers on them to protect them against the elements.<\/p>\n

You could lock your classic car in the garage and declare it SORN during the winter months if you do not intend to drive it and arrange laid up cover.<\/p><\/div>\n

So, if you are one of those people, what do you do about your classic car insurance? A number of people continue with their existing level of cover whether that is comprehensive, third party fire and theft or just third party cover. However, there may be a cheaper option and that is \u2018laid up\u2019 cover.<\/p>\n

In order to qualify for laid up cover you will have to declare your classic vehicle SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) and keep it locked in your garage. You can then apply to switch your existing level of cover to laid up cover.<\/p>\n

This would cover you for theft or fire and you could benefit from the premium being reduced thus saving you some money. Obviously, you could not drive the vehicle or take it out of your garage if you only had laid up cover. A number of keen classic car owners who like to carry out their own restoration work during the winter months switch their insurance to laid up cover to save a few pounds. They would still be covered should their car be destroyed in a fire that could have been caused whilst restoring the vehicle.<\/p>\n

Obviously, when spring arrives and you want to get your car back on the road then you would need to change the level of cover to a minimum of third party that is a minimum legal requirement.<\/p>\n
