New Registration Policies For Restored, Repaired & Modified Vehicles

If you are a classic car enthusiast, you will be pleased to read that the DVLA announced on the 20th August 2025 that, with effect from the 26th August 2025, new registration policies were to be put in place for modified, repaired and restored vehicles. Apparently it does not matter what the age of the vehicle is.

As a result of these amendments it will result in it being easier for classic car owners to register modified, restored and repaired vehicles. We are sure that you will agree this is a piece of welcome news if you are involved with classic and historic vehicles.

Apparently, in excess of 1,350 responses were received from various people and sources to questions in relation to the above.

The major changes were that vehicles that are structurally modified in a significant way would be permitted to retain their original registration number and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) as long as the DVLA has been notified by the registered keeper. Also, as long as there are no changes to the log book (V5C) and the vehicle still looks the same as when it was originally built, it will no longer be necessary to inform the DVLA of restorations and repairs that are like-for-like. Also, as long as the registered keeper informs the DVLA of the changes, vehicles will be allowed to keep their original identity, that have been converted to electric.

Minister for the Future of Roads, Lillian Greenwood, said:

“We know how much love, time and effort goes into keeping classic cars – and we’re right behind the community.

These changes are about cutting red tape and making life easier for enthusiasts, whether you’re restoring a vintage gem or converting it to electric. It’s all about celebrating the UK’s amazing motoring heritage and helping the industry thrive well into the future.”

As we said earlier, this announcement sounds like it is great news for many of those people involved with classic and vintage vehicles. Apparently, the classic vehicle industry generates a significant sum of money each year.
