You will be pleased to read that the average cost of car insurance has fallen slightly in the third quarter of 2026. Whilst this fall relates to insuring the likes of a family car it is quite possible that the average cost of insuring a classic car may also have come down. In the current economic climate here in the UK this is positive news.
Every quarter, Confused.com that is a very well known price comparison website produces its car insurance price index. You can read the full report on the Confused.com website but we thought we would mention just a few of the things contained in the report.
The average cost of fully comprehensive car insurance in the UK in the third quarter of 2026 amounted to £713 per annum. This is a small drop of £6 per annum when compared with the second quarter in 2026 when such premiums averaged £719 per annum. It is an average of £2 per annum more than it was in the first quarter of 2026 but is an average of £13 per annum less than the fourth quarter of 2025 and an average of £21 per annum below the figure in the third quarter of 2025.
You are possibly aware that the amount car insurance companies charge their policyholders is based upon a number of things such as how old a diver is and where the driver lives and keeps his or her car.
For instance, it will probably not come as too much of a surprise to read that it is the younger motorist who, on average, pays more for his or her car insurance as they are more likely to be involved in a road traffic accident in comparison to a 50 year old with many years driving experience.
As an example, in the third quarter of 2026, a motorist in the 17 to 20 year old age bracket is charged an average of £1,860 per annum, a driver aged between 30 to 39 pays an average of £843 per annum and a motorist aged between 60 to 69 pays on average £457 per annum. As you can see, there is a huge variance in the cost.
Unfortunately, if you live in Inner London, on average, you will pay more for your car insurance than in any other region. Premiums in this region averaged £1,079 per annum. If you happen to live in the West Midlands, premiums average £781 per annum. If you reside in the South West, car insurance premiums average £550 per annum. The cheapest region in the UK for car insurance is Wales – Central & North with premiums averaging £517 per annum.
